Local Resources
TAKE ACTIOn
Several organizations exist in Berkeley that can guide your family every step of the way as you advocate for your child's specific needs within BUSD.
YOUR SCHOOL
The first step is always your school site. If you have concerns about any barriers to your child's ability to access the curriculum, you can request a formal evaluation by emailing your child's teacher and the principal. You can make this request at any age or grade, at any time of the school year.
Some school PTAs have specific resources for famillies that are beginning to navigate the special education evaluation and service delivery processes. Check your school PTA's email list to see if there is a specific parent volunteer who can guide you.
DREDF
Understanding your child's legal rights is an important foundation for being able to effectively advocate for their needs at school. The Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund runs a free advice line at 1-800-348-4232, staffed by local education advocates here in Berkeley. You can also reach out to them via email at iephelp@dredf.org.

REGIONAL CENTER OF THE EAST BAY
Whether you need an initial evaluation, support services, respite care or parent training, the Regional Center can provide services to eligible local families.

CAC
The Community Advisory Committee of the North Region SELPA, which includes Berkeley Unified, holds meetings nearly every month of the school year. You can find parent education and coordinated local advocacy within the East Bay.
